Ver Players is a community ukulele group based in St Albans. Founded in 2012, the group has grown to around eighty members of all ages, who meet once a fortnight to sing, play and unleash their inner creativity. The group alternates between small, focused practise sessions in The Barn, Cell Barnes Lane, or at the Bandstand in Clarence Park and larger old-fashioned singalongs in The Fighting Cocks, a local pub open to all. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to get together and experience live music.

Members typically join as complete beginners before quickly gaining confidence as they realise they can start to produce real music. The open, collaborative spirit ensures a fun and friendly atmosphere to learn, laugh – and ‘lose yourself in the ukulele’!

We also run a programme of ukelele workshops and can provide one-to-one teaching. To join us, take a look at the membership page.

Dark Side of the Uke

A reimagining of Pink Floyd’s classic album, 50 years on!

Over the past 10 years they have celebrated a number of musical anniversaries, with joyous performances of The Sound of Music, VE Day, Bridge Over Troubled Water and the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Now, with Dark Side of the Uke, Ver Players turn their attention to Pink Floyd’s seminal concept album, the Dark Side of the Moon, released 50 years ago this year. It promises to be a tribute performance like no other, conjuring the sounds of care-free summer days and mixing joyous celebration with surprising pathos. In short: the full range of emotion that only the ukulele can evoke, performed in the beautiful setting of:

Ukulele Workshop

We’re delighted that Peter Luongo is visiting us on May 14th. We saw him in action last year and he’s got to be the best teacher of performing on the uke around, and he’s spent his career at the amazing Langley School in Canada teaching the likes of James Hill.

Peter writes: “My aim is to have the group play 2 or 3 arrangements that I’ll put together with them by the end of the session. I’ll be demonstrating vocal, instrumental, and picking techniques throughout…”
