Jelly Roll Morton 20/10/1890 – 10/07/1941 Jelly Roll Morton was born as Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe, in downtown New Orleans, at the age of 14 he was playing piano in a brothel, (sporting house) and living with his Great Grandmother. He convinced her that he was working as night watchman in a barrel factory. When she found out he was playing in a brothel, the god fearing Great Grandmother kicked him out of the house. In 1904 he started touring with minstrel shows and spent time in Chicago and New York, settling in Chicago. He began to write him compositions down and in 1915, his Jelly Roll Blues was the first Jazz song published as sheet music. In 1928 Morton married a showgirl, Mable Bertrand in Gary, Indiana and moved to New York. In 1935 he moved to Washington D.C. to become the manager/piano player at the Music Box bar. in 1938 Morton was stabbed by a friend of the owner of the club and suffered wounds to the head and chest. The Folklorist Alan Lomax had heard Morton playing in the bar and he invited Morton to record for the Library of Congress. Lomax was interested in Morton’s New Orleans days, and eventually Morton acquiesced and recorded songs of the time. Because of the suggestive and rude nature of the songs, some of the Library of Congress recordings were not released until 2005. Eventually, the wounds from his stabbing, and respiratory problems lead to his death in 1941 Morton claims Alabama Bound and Tiger Rag as two of his compositions although they seem to have been copyrighted earlier by others. His composition Sweet Peter seems to be the source for the melody of All of Me. Source Wikipedia
